The odds are increasing that the statue of Dutch explorer Abel Tasman will one day be moved from Tahunanui to a more appropriate historical site, following fresh discussions over conditions of its consent not having been met. De kans wordt steeds groter dat het standbeeld van de Nederlandse ontdekkingsreiziger Abel Tasman op een dag verplaatst zal worden naar een plek die historisch meer verantwoord is. The statue of Abel Tasman, which has stood at Tahunanui Beach since 2000, represents “a man out of place” and would be of greater symbolic relevance if placed in Golden Bay, says Nelson artist Janet Bathgate. A call for the Nelson region’s two councils to mark 370 years since Abel Tasman dropped anchor in what is now Golden Bay has reignited debate over placement of the Dutch explorer’s statue at Tahunanui. Een oproep aan de twee regioraden van Nelson om het feit te herdenken dat Abel Tasman zijn anker 370 jaar geleden liet vallen in wat nu Golden Bay is, heeft de discussie weer doen oplaaien over de plaatsing van het standbeeld van de Nederlandse ontdekkingsreiziger.
