Had the Dutch and Tumatakokiri communicated through writing and drawings, rather than through calls and sounds, would they have found a common language? The “portrait” of Abel Tasman that has been doing the rounds since I was in primary school shows a man with long dark hair, a buckled belt across his chest and a flamboyant lace collar. Photographs of the high tide washing to and fro the beach at Whariwharangi looked to me just like Tasman’s lace collar. I placed horizontal strips of Maori taniko patterning across the composition with Tasman’s buckle at the centre. Het “portret” van Abel Tasman dat de ronde doet sinds ik op de lagere school zat laat een man zien met donker lang haar, een riem met gesp rond zijn borst en een flamboyante kanten kraag. Foto’s van het hoogtij dat heen en weer over het strand van Whariwharangi spoelde, kwam me voor als Tasman’s kraag. Ik plaatste horizontale banen met Maori taniko patronen over de compositie met Tasman’s gesp in het centrum. (Janet Bathgate)
