We were invited for a Powhiri the Onetahua Marae in Pohara and had a wonderful time, together with the kids of Central Takaka School. We waren uitgenodigd voor een Powhiri in de Onetahua Marae in Pohara, samen met de kinderen van Central Takaka School. Het was erg leuk en informatief.

It is the home marae for three local iwi: Ngati Rarua, Ngati Tama and Te Ātiawa, but it operates as a multicultural marae with the wider involvement of the whole community. At the gate entrance there’s also a carving that tells of Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri, the tribe which was in occupation at the time Abel Tasman arrived in Mohua (Golden Bay). Het is de marae die geldt als thuisbasis voor drie locale iwi: Ngati Rarua, Ngati Tama en Te Ātiawa, maar het functioneert als een multiculturele marae waaraan de hele gemeenschap deelneemt. Bij de ingang is ook een houtsnede te zien die vertelt over Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri, de heersende stam in de periode dat Abel Tasman arriveerde in Mohua (Golden Bay).
