In December 1642 the first meeting between Māori and Europeans took place: Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri and Abel Tasman. This encounter is illustrated from a 17th century point of view in the now iconic image of the 'Murderer's Bay'. Project 'View on Golden Bay' wants to rebuild this illustration with the help of views from artists, writers and researchers from both New Zealand and The Netherlands. The project will result in a book and exhibition. (read more). In december 1642 vond de eerste ontmoeting plaats tussen Māori en Europeanen: Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri en Abel Tasman. Deze ontmoeting wordt vanuit 17e eeuw Europees perspectief weergegeven in de inmiddels iconografische illustratie van de 'Moordenaarsbaai'. Project 'Zicht op Golden Bay' wil dit beeld opnieuw opbouwen met behulp van inzichten van kunstenaars, schrijvers en onderzoekers uit zowel Nieuw-Zeeland als Nederland. Walking from Wainui Bay (where it is thought that local Maori in 1642 had their gardens and maybe one of Tasman’s small boats approached this bay on the 18th of December), past Taupo Point (once a Pa and settlement, from which the Maori might have come that Tasman met the next day), past Whariwharangi Bay (where the confrontation between Maori and Tasman probably has taken place) to Totaranui (with the visitor centre for the Abel Tasman National Park). Wandeling van Wainui Bay (gedacht wordt dat hier de Maori in 1642 hun groente verbouwden en misschien naderde een van Tasman’s verkenningsboten deze baai op 18 December), langs Taupo Point (ooit een Pa en nederzetting, waar wellicht de Maori vandaan kwamen die Tasman de volgende dag ontmoette), langs Whariwharangi Bay (waar waarschijnlijk de confrontatie tussen Maori en Tasman heeft plaatsgevonden) naar Totaranui (met het bezoekerscentrum voor het Abel Tasman national Park).
